Ten hours in muck, frost and standing water. Here's what makes a proper farming welly, and the Grubs boots built for the job.

Quick answer: the best wellington boots for farming are insulated, have a deep self-cleaning tread and protect your toes, because a farm welly gets worn for ten hours a day in muck, frost and standing water. For most farmers that means a 5mm neoprene boot like the Grubs Fenline 5.0 or Tayline 5.0. If you're out lambing at 3am in January, step up to an 8.5mm boot like the Bearline 8.5, which is comfort rated to -40°C.

Right, let's be honest. Most "best wellies" lists are written by folk who've worn a pair round a garden centre car park. A farm welly is a different beast. It's on at dawn and off at teatime. It's been through the parlour, across a frozen yard, up a slurry-slick ramp and into a field that's more pond than pasture. If it lets you down, you know about it all day.

We've been making boots in Bolton since 1776, and farmers have been telling us what goes wrong with their wellies for a very long time. Here's what actually matters, and which Grubs boots we'd put on your feet.

What makes a good farming welly?

1. Insulation that copes with standing still

Walking keeps you warm. Feeding round, waiting for the vet or leaning on a gate does not. The cold creeps up from the ground, and a plain rubber or PVC welly has nothing to stop it. A neoprene boot traps a layer of warmth around your foot and leg, so you're not stamping about to get the feeling back in your toes by half nine.

Every Grubs farm boot uses our INSUFOAM-ULTRA™ neoprene, and most add a 6mm NITROCELL™ footbed. That footbed holds around a million microscopic nitrogen bubbles that insulate you from cold yards and frozen ground, which is exactly where most "cold feet" actually come from.

2. A sole that grips mud and sheds it

Mud-clogged treads are useless treads. You want deep lugs that bite into soft ground and then clear themselves as you walk. The Tayline 5.0 has our TRAK™ outsole, a deep tractor-style tread with a prominent heel for braking on the way downhill. The Fenline 5.0 uses TREDZ™, built for soft ground, mud and snow, with moulded siping on the outer tread so it doesn't skate about on wet concrete yards.

3. Toe and heel protection

Hooves, gates, feed bags and quad bikes all have a habit of landing on feet. Fenline, Tayline and Bearline all have HARD TOE™ technology and a reinforced heel. That's built-in protection for daily knocks, not a certified safety toecap. If your job or your insurer needs a rated safety boot, have a read of our guide to choosing safety wellington boots.

4. A lining that doesn't go rank

Cotton-lined boots hold sweat, and after a few weeks you can smell them from the back door. Our SUPERDRI™ lining wicks moisture away from your foot and is fungus and rot proof, so the boot doesn't end up smelling like a cotton-lined one.

5. Comfort for a ten-hour day

Concrete yards are murder on knees and backs. HEXZORB™ technology in the Fenline and Tayline heels absorbs heel-strike shock, so the last hour of the day doesn't feel like the first hour of a hangover.

If we had to pick one boot for a working farm, this is it. The Fenline 5.0 was updated to be tougher and harder-wearing for farmers who need comfort all day. You get 5mm INSUFOAM-ULTRA™ neoprene with calf-height rubber, the TREDZ™ outsole with siping for wet yards, a 6mm NITROCELL™ footbed, HEXZORB™ heel, SUPERDRI™ lining and HARD TOE™ protection. It's comfort rated from -20°C to +20°C, which covers a British farming year.

Grubs Tayline 5.0: for proper deep muck

If your gateways turn into chocolate mousse by November, the Tayline 5.0 is your boot. Same 5mm neoprene, SUPERDRI™ lining, HEXZORB™ heel and HARD TOE™ protection as the Fenline, but with the deep TRAK™ tractor tread for powerful traction on soft ground. Again, it's comfort rated -20°C to +20°C.

The Bearline 8.5 is the one for the coldest jobs. It has 8.5mm INSUFOAM-ULTRA™ wrapped 360° around your foot, a BEARPAW™ sole made from DRY-RUBBER™ sheets textured like a bear's paw for grip on slippery surfaces, FOOTFRAME™ underfoot support, HARD TOE™ protection and ULTRA-BOUNCE™ shock absorption. It's comfort rated to -40°C. Not sure you need that much warmth? Our guide to how warm insulated wellies should be breaks it down.

You'll find all of these, plus the rest of our field boots, in the Field & Agriculture collection.

To be fair to PVC: an unlined PVC boot is cheap, easy to hose out and great for dairy hygiene. That's why we also sell Nora's acid-resistant PVC boots. But if you're outside in winter for hours, you'll feel the difference by lunchtime.

Neoprene or rubber for farm work?

For year-round farm work, neoprene wins on warmth and comfort. A full-rubber boot is fine for quick jobs in mild weather, and it's easy to keep clean. We've done a full side-by-side in neoprene versus rubber wellington boots, and if you want the science behind the foam, see neoprene wellies explained.

Farming welly questions folk ask us

What are the warmest wellies for farmers?

Go for 8.5mm neoprene. The Grubs Bearline 8.5 has 8.5mm INSUFOAM-ULTRA™ wrapped 360° around the foot and is comfort rated to -40°C. Our Snowline 8.5 and Treeline 8.5 field boots are also rated to -40°C.

Are neoprene wellies good for farm work?

Yes. Neoprene holds warmth around your foot and leg while you're standing still, which is most of farm work. Pair it with a rubber lower and a deep tread, like the Fenline 5.0 and Tayline 5.0, and you get a boot that's warm, waterproof and tough.

Do farm wellies need a steel toe cap?

Not always. Fenline, Tayline and Bearline have HARD TOE™ protection for everyday knocks. If your workplace needs certified safety footwear, choose a rated safety welly like the Grubs CERAMIC 5.0 S5™, which has a non-metallic safety toe, so there's no steel to conduct the cold.

How long should farm wellies last?

That depends on how hard you work them. You'll get much more out of a pair if you rinse muck and slurry off, dry them away from direct heat and store them upright. A rot-proof lining like SUPERDRI™ also means the inside doesn't break down from sweat.

What size farm wellies should I buy?

Buy the same size as your everyday shoes. Grubs boots allow 15mm for thicker wool-blend socks, so there's no need to size up, and if you're a half size we recommend going down. Our welly fit guide has the full details.
