Best Outdoors has carried the launch of SPLISH 4.0™ — the first barefoot boot from Muddies®, the children's range from Grubs. It brings a genuinely minimalist build to a boot that still has to survive a British autumn: a wide toe box, a zero heel drop and a thin, flexible sole, wrapped in the warmth and waterproofing that little feet actually need once the weather turns.

What "barefoot" means in a welly

Barefoot footwear — also known as minimalist footwear — is designed to replicate the sensation of walking barefoot while keeping feet protected from cold, wet and muddy conditions. SPLISH does that in two ways. A wide, foot-shaped toe box lets toes spread naturally instead of being squeezed towards a point. And a zero heel drop keeps the heel level with the forefoot, in its natural position, allowing the Achilles tendon to extend as it would with no shoe on at all.

Underneath sits a thin, flexible GATS rubber sole with a stack height of just 6 mm, so there is real ground feel under the foot. The whole boot is built to move with the foot rather than splint it.

Why that matters for growing feet

The thinking behind the design is straightforward: natural movement builds strong feet. Allowing children's feet to flex, grip and feel the ground helps strengthen the small muscles of the foot, which in turn supports balance and stability and posture, and reduces the risk of pain carried up into the knees, back and other joints. The lightweight construction helps too — a less intrusive boot is a boot children can actually be agile in.

Still a Muddies: comfort, grip, warmth, waterproof

Minimalist does not mean unprotected. SPLISH is built on a neoprene and rubber upper with a cosy fleece lining and 4 mm INSUFOAM-ULTRA™ insulation, and it is comfort rated from +20°C down to −20°C for year-round wear. The construction is fully waterproof, and the sole is cut for grip across wet grass, mud and the bottom of a puddle. Four things, in other words, and they are the four things the range is built around: comfort, grip, warmth and waterproof.

Patterns and colours to suit all tastes

As the announcement puts it, the boots are "bright and colourful with patterns and colours to suit all tastes" — flowers, hearts, rainbows, butterflies and a clean plain indigo among them — so little feet stay protected, warm and dry without looking like an afterthought. A Velcro strap at the rear makes them easy on and easy off, the fit runs medium to wide, and they come in UK sizes 3 to 9.

Nine generations in the making

Grubs is a family business that has evolved through nine generations of the Foster family. It traces back to 1776, when it began by making shoes for the local community, later specialising in footwear for the new Victorian and Edwardian sports before growing into the global outdoor brand it is today. SPLISH is the newest step in that line — and the first one designed around letting feet do what they were built to do.
